Writers' Treasures - Treasures for Writers - Treasures of Writers

Original Source Of The Shakespeare-X Message.

This is the writers' treasure chest.

It's still pretty empty but I'll fill it up if you send me exciting stuff to put here. Writers' Treasures

Think of it as a dowry to bring when you go to marry your masterpiece.

Here's what we have now:

1. Radio interview with David Foster Wallace. (30 minutes)

This interview is from when Wallace was doing publicity for the launch of Infinite Jest and he still had it all in front of him.

The interviewer is Michael Silverblatt on his excellent literary radio show Bookworm, which is on KCRW and is here: Bookworm Radio Show on KCRW

This interview was pre-empted and never aired. It's 30 minutes long. (13.5Mb)

2. Two uncollected Holden Caulfield stories from JD Salinger.

This is the first appearance in print of Holden Caulfield. Both of these stories are early drafts which subsequently became chapters in Catcher In The Rye. They were published in 1945/46 but never collected for publication in a book. Both stories show variations on the same material as it appears in Catcher In The Rye.

JD Salinger - I'm Crazy (pdf) - Holden Caulfield leaves prep school.

JD Salinger - A Slight Rebellion Off Madison (pdf) - Holden Caulfield gets drunk and goes skating with Sally.

A Slight Rebellion Off Madison was written in 1941, it was Salinger's first story accepted for publication although it did not appear in the New Yorker until after the war. It is especially interesting because it is written in the third person, and so it's a very early draft in the writing of the book, and in Salinger's career.

10. A gorgeous photograph of Robert Louis Stevenson (sitting outside his house), in Samoa in 1892.

He died there 2 years later at age 44, having taken the Samoan name Tusitala, Samoan for 'Teller of Tales'.

11. A wonderful photograph of Tolstoy and Chekhov meeting. How much genius is that? Too much for any one chaise longue. A quick examination of boots and beards signals the arrival of Modernism.

12. A lovely photograph of William Burroughs and Kurt Vonnegut sitting together as two grumpy old men.

13. A rare photograph of Leo Tolstoy, young and strong. And ready to eat you alive.

14. A Secret link to a new hidden Lee Vidor novel excerpt on this site which is such an early draft it contains a horrific error which I can't be bothered taking out now. If you're a writer you'll laugh your head off when you see it. The moral is never publish too early.. Oh there's no link!.. Bad luck.
